KuC Talent Search Services
We offer a variety of services your school can take advantage of. Many of these programs are partnering with other programs within KuC and with outside agencies to increase opportunities for our students. We are presently offering these services:
College Camp. This is the cornerstone of our program. Nearly 150 students will attend from all over the Y-K Delta. We hope to select the strongest students from each village ages 11- Juniors in high school. Each camp session lasts 6 days, with 5-6 seperated rotations of students. College Camp takes place at the UAF- Kuskokwim University Campus in Bethel, AK. Students apply in spring to attend a week-long, all expenseses paid (yes, travel too) summer camp. Students that attend will learn
how to be successful at continuing their education after high school and become more comfortable with the college experience. While living at the Sackett Hall Student Dormitory, students attend classes in the mornings, participate in special projects, social activities and career exploration in the afteroon, kayak or swim in the evenings and spend the late evening completeing homework. Specific attendance will vary by week but camp dates run from early June to late July.
Field Science Camp. The Vision: Grow engineers, scientists and technology specialists from the Y-K Delta to work in the Y-K Delta. It can be done and Talent Search is teaming up with the KuC Science and Technology Acadamy to make it happen. The classroom is Nash Harbor, Nunivak Island, Bearing Sea.
Ten to twelve high school juniors will be selected for an adventure based research camp. Dual credit is offered to schools who wish. Students earn 4 credits in Biology 104. From here students are ushered into the ANSEP (Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program) pathway. Ultimately a high paying job awaits students who take this first step. The cast of instructors include world renowed kayaker Martin Leonard, Biology Professor Corky Corkern, Artic Engineering Professor Bob Brown, Master Chef Jerome Longo, local elders and kayak builders. This camp is a great opportunity for those gearing up for college. Eligible students must be highly motivated and successful in math and/or science fields. Ten to twelve graduated seniors will attend a camp that focuses on academics and internships in STEM Fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Students earn 4 college credist in calculus, while also working nearly full time at a local internship. From here students are ushered into the ANSEP (Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program) pathway when they enter college. This is a great way to earn money and experience before college. Eligilbe students must be college and calculus ready. Camp takes place at the UAF- Kuskokwim University Campus in Bethel, AK. Students live in the Annex Student Dormitory while camp runs from early June to late July.
Senior Advising and Counseling. All seniors enrolled in Talent Search are rountinely called to be sure they are taking steps towards enrolling in college or vocational education. Assistance is given with choosing an institution, filing out applications and applying for scholarships. Check out the link to a comprehensive list of local scholarships.
